This intensive one-day course provides a thorough overview of part 9 of the Ontario Building Code (OBC 2012) and its applications in the design and construction of single-family dwellings (Houses). Focusing on structural requirements, health & safety, building envelope, and barrier-free design, the course adopts a practical approach where, to further clarify the different code requirements, a number of actual projects and case studies will be discussed throughout the course.
Understand the scope and application of part 9 of the Ontario Building Code;
Understand the structural requirements for houses as it relates to footings, foundations walls, slabs, loadbearing walls columns, beams and roofs;
Understand the health and safety requirements for houses as they relate to heights & areas of different spaces, stairs, windows and doors;
Understand the Fire Protection requirements for houses as it pertains to means of egress, exits, fire resistance rating, fire separation and construction types;
Understand the design standards for Wood Frame Construction as described by the OBC and Canadian Wood-Frame House Construction; and
By the end of the course you will be able to complete an OBC Matrix for a House under Part 9 of the Ontario Building Code.
Architects, construction managers, designers, building technologists, and engineers of different fields (civil/structural, mechanical, or electrical) looking to have a better understanding of part 9 of the Ontario Building Code.
You should have a general understanding of the building construction process and should possess basic blueprint reading skills.

Rafik is a Registered Architect in both Ontario and British Columbia. He has a Master’s degree in Architecture and a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, and has over 20 years of practical experience in the field of architecture and construction in Canada and overseas, working with a number of consulting firms including Pylons Architecture, TDA design, WD Partners Inc., Design House, and ASH – CGES Inc.
Furthermore, Rafik has been running his own architectural practice for the past 5 years; working on a variety of residential, commercial and industrial projects.
In addition to his practical experience, Rafik has a long experience teaching the building code to design professionals of different backgrounds and mentoring intern architects through their licensure process.
