After participating in this course, you will be able to
Assess the suitability of shallow foundations for the different loading and soil conditions
Identify the different factors affecting the resistance of shallow foundations
Understand the procedures to design shallow foundations to withstand compressive, uplift and inclined loads in cohesionless and cohesive soils
Carry out structural and geotechnical designs of shallow foundations as per the most commonly used design references in North America including Design the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, AASHTO and the Canadian Highway Bridge Code

A. Fahmy PhD, PEng, PE
Dr. Ahmed Fahmy is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at AECOM (New York Metro). He has over 15 years of practical experience working with several employers in Canada, the United States, and the middle east, including AECOM, 30 Forensic Engineering, Golder Associates Ltd., Geoterre Ltd., Dar Al Handasah Consultants, and Geo-Consultants Group. He has provided engineering support services on a wide variety of large scale projects, and was involved in numerous forensic investigations related to legal and insurance claims.
In addition to his practical experience, Dr. Fahmy served as assistant professor at the University of Western Ontario, McMaster University and Dhofar University..
Dr. Fahmy is an active member of the executive education committee of the Canadian Geotechnical Society and the deep foundations committee of ASTM international. He has received several awards, has multiple publications, and has served as a reviewer for numerous geotechnical journals and conferences.
M. Meckkey PhD, PEng
Dr. Meckkey is an adjunct professor at Western University and a senior geostructural engineer at Atlantic Industries Limited. He has been involved in developing and designing geostructural systems for the past 10 years. His expertise includes marine terminal infrastructure, linear infrastructure, surface mining, machine foundations, geo- dynamic engineering, computational geomechanics and sustainability. His global expertise extends from North America, South America, Middle East to New Zealand. He is a licensed professional engineer in ON, BC, NFL NT and NU.
Dr. Meckkey earned his master and PhD from Western University, and he authored several publications and presented at numerous international conferences. He is involved in the development of MSE walls and buried bridges in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA-S6-19).
